With an elegant name as the Yang Ming Mountain in Yunlin, Mount Huashan in GuKeng is the original hometown of Taiwanese Coffee. For the Huashan Village suffering from the frequent impingements of debris flows, both the spontaneous input of its residents and government guidance have been indispensable to its successful transmutation and transformation.
Leaning against the Da Jian Mountain with an altitude of 1304 meters to its east side, and encircled by a hill on either of its left and right side, the Huashan Village in the freshly green mountain was called as Dahudi in the former days.In June, 2002, a rainstorm caused the soil and stones of nearly 90 thousand cubic meters to roll down, and a part of highways and bridges were destroyed. In that case, this village was once in a great danger. After the SWCB adopted the ecological engineering method and used local materials to carry out the prevention and control of debris flows, three brand-new comb dams have been erected under the collapse sites on the Huashan River to contain the debris flow crises effectively, while the Huashan Debris Flow Education Garden has been established to provide the visual illustrations of reasons as to why debris flow disasters can be formed, and of such structures as the sabo-dam.
Debris flows have never destroyed the enthusiasm of Huashan villagers to construct their home town, but rather, even more intensified their determination to deeply explore this piece of land. SWCB has demonstrated its seriousness to local villagers by way of its efforts in preventing and controlling the debris flows in the Huashan area. Meanwhile, it has organized the Huashan Community Development Association and the Huashan Recreational Industry Alliance to play an active role in the reconstruction of rural clans and building of this community. In this way, the beautiful scenes of forests in Huashan Mountain and the features of Taiwanese coffee have been successfully integrated to infill the beauty of Huashan with more ecological and educational significance.
