In Hualien County, the name recognition of local industries in either the Feng Yi Li of Fong-Lin Township or Mijhan Village of Shoufong Township has been achieved on the basis of bamboo charcoals and pomelos respectively. In particular, the Zantan (Commendable Charcoal) Workshop has been integrated with the local FengHuang Waterfall and Yuelu (FengHuang Plum Garden) to string together the Feng Yi tourism belt, while the autumn will see the numerous clusters of pomelo in the Mijhan Village with the pomelo fragrance spreading everywhere. With the help of the soil and water conservation bureau, council of agriculture, executive yuan, these two villages have gradually grown into the spots of rural leisure tourism.
The Fonglin Township was formerly called as Marlimu, a name in Amis, which referred to an upslope. When Hans came to settle here in early years, they started to call this place as Fonglin in that they saw the exuberant forests with lily magnolia plants crawling up the big trees, just like the shape of a phoenix spreading its wings. Feng Yi Li locates at the west foot of the mountain, and until now, there is a FengHuang Tai (Phoenix Stage) set at the Yuelu at an altitudinal height of 800 meters, which is an excellent site on which the hot program of night landscape in Hualien County is held.

Fonglin is a typical Hakka village in which the immigrated Hakka people have retained their laborious and frugal habits, and have continually laid great emphasis on education so that Fonglin has now become a cradle of trained school principals and teachers. Especially, the Zantan Workshop, a bamboo charcoal kiln introduced in recent years, has now functioned as the DreamWorks for school principals and teachers. Using the mosochiku bamboo as the raw material to burn out the highly electricity conductible bamboo charcoals, this workshop has unexpectedly become a hot scenic spot in Hualien, and has further been integrated with Yuelu to form part of the traveling route in Feng Yi Li.
Four years ago, the Fonglin area was severely destroyed due to the impact of the Typhoon Toraji. The Shoufeng Township adjacent to Fonglin is a land full of fishes and rice in Hualien, while the Mijhan Village just locates on its southeast side. In recent years, the juicy and savory pomelos of Mijhan have become renowned throughout Taiwan, while there is also an ancient salty carrying path here connecting the Mijhan Village and Shuei-lian Village. In early years, such agricultural products of Shuei-lian Village as the rice, cereals and camphor oil were all transported through this village. Therefore, a stack was established here and village was in turn called as Mijhan (Rice Stack). Most of the residents in this village are the Amis people, while there are also a number of Hakka immigrants living here.

The ancient salt carrying (or rice carrying) path has always received the careful maintenance by the residents in both the Mijhan and Shuei-lian clans. As its route is not very long, this path is fit for both elder and younger people. Now, it has become a great site at which tourists and local residents can go for an exercise walk. In summer, there is the exuberance of birds and natural resources, as well as the excellent landscape here. So this site is definitely worthy of your personal visit.
In both the Mijhan Village and Yuemei Village standing along the No. 195 County Road, the local residents would mainly specialize in farming. In early years, they were more inclined to plant lemongrass and phoenix trees, when there were altogether three lemongrass oil processing factories in the village. Later, they switched to plant citruses and oranges, as well as the pomelos. The Mijhan and Yuemei villages of the Shoufeng Township locate contiguously to each other, while the Liangjiazhuang village whose district is under the administration of Yuemei village has been a place where there was the earliest operation of civil accommodations and has become a very popular leisure garden accordingly. The Liangjiazhuang village mainly specializes in the plantation and cultivation of pearl guavas, citruses and oranges, and pomelos, while fish ponds are also built here.
Most characteristic of Fengyili would be the peeled chilli, Hakka cuisines, Bird Nest ferns, plums and bamboo charcoals, where at the Zantan Workshop, there are both the outdoor resting area and bamboo charcoal production area, which are open free for tourists to visit.
